Karate for us is not simply a form of self-defense….. it is a way of life.
This past weekend our Sensei, Jose Ferrand, traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to teach a workshop to close to 50 people. JKA Haiti hosted the event with the goal of advancing the practice of karate in Haiti.
Throughout the weekend, Sensei Ferrand taught advanced kumite technique, kihon and basic katas to close to 50 students. Two of our dojo members from the US Team, Jovany and Andre, also joined Sensei.
Thank you JKA Haiti for hosting such a great event! Oss!

Last month we had yet another successful beach practice, in celebration of our founding. We met at the Crandon Park Beach at 8 a.m. for training, and then spent the day playing baseball, grilling and celebrating with our dojo members. Once again, our friends at Fandango Pictures beautifully captured this event.
Miami Shotokan Karate Club is looking to represent both Miami and the USA in both tournaments and camps this year. And we need your support! Coming up in September, our sensei and some of our dojo members will be representing the US Team in the South American Championship in Chile.
We’ve started a GoFundMe account to help our dojo pay for the honor of representing the US team in Chile, and we would love your support! All donations will be used to assist with travel costs to and from tournaments and camps.
Thank you for your support!
Join us on Saturday, June 25th at 7:00 p.m. to watch the 13th Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate Championship. This worldwide tournament took place in Tokyo in 2014 and Miami Shotokan had several dojo members participate as part of the US Team. Our Sensei also participated as one of the US Team Coaches.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and there will be food and beverages for sale. All proceeds from the event benefit Miami Shotokan Karate Club’s dojo members representing the US Team in the South American Championship in Chile this September.
We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!
Miami Shotokan recently attended the 2016 National Training Camp hosted by JKA/AF, and enjoyed the opportunity to train with guest instructor, Koichiro Okuma, 6th Dan JKA.
The camp, held in New Orleans, covered a variety of trainings over the weekend of June 9th, 2016. Our dojo members greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn and train with our fellow KarateKas from other dojos.
Thank you JKA/AF for hosting another great training camp! Osu.

As we are ramping up our YouTube channel, we wanted to share this demonstration of the kata, Unsu that Sensei Jose and dojo member Andre Fiallos recorded recently. In this demonstration they show the bunkai of each movement. For those of you not familiar with the term, bunkai means the practical application of the technique.
Enjoy!
