Throwback Thursday – Sunrise Practice Training

One of our time-honored dojo traditions is our annual sunrise beach training in Key Biscayne. Because this event is coming up in just a little over a month, we thought we’d share some moments from last year’s event.

In case you haven’t joined Miami Shotokan Karate Club for one of our beach practices, this year is our 23rd year in which we meet in Key Biscayne at 6 a.m. We start with a quick walk/jog to the beach, where we train basics, sparring drills and end with a friendly kata competition. Mostly in the ocean. Once we finish, we camp out in Crandon Park where we BBQ, play baseball, trade stories and enjoy the company of the dojo.

The event is open to both kids and adults, from white belts to black belts. We are also lucky to have friends from other dojos join us for the fun.

Here’s a few pictures from last year’s event, courtesy of our friends at Fandango PicturesDerek Latta Photography and dojo member, Caryn Cravens.

2016 Winter Camp

We just wrapped up a week of training with Kobayashi Sensei, and what a great camp! Sensei Kobayashi taught several classes on kata, kihon and kumite drills, with special focus on relaxation.

In between classes, we enjoyed the opportunity to take Sensei to a day trip to Islamorada, and we enjoyed several dinners. As always, our members and other dojos enjoyed the opportunity to learn and train and continue to build camaraderie. Below are some photos from the event.

Thank you Kobayashi Sensei for the great camp! We look forward to more!
